When a Dog Grows Older
By Luna Avila
When my aunt arrived at my house, she handed me the dog, he is the size of my palm and all he can do was jump around like a bunny. He is so fast and can even jump so high that he hits the light every time, and it flickers leaving the light cover with a little dent that you can see when you are in the corner of the room. I keep being asked his name and I am sure his name is meant to be Carlitos, I know I am because when I sit on the couch with him, his eyes glisten as he lays down and he puts his head on top of my knee. My dad wrapped him in a pink blanket, which has princesses such as Belle, Rapunzel, Aurora, Tiana, and Ariel with the soft fur of the blanket around the soft fur of my dog, he swaddles him like a baby, and he closes his sparkly eyes that glistened when any light reflected on them and falls asleep.
Randomly I wake up to him being as tall as my leg and I was astonished at how much he can grow in one night. His legs are up to my knee as his head brushes against the side of my thigh with his paws the size of my hand and his nails sharp as a knife. I was in disbelief that he went from the size of my palm to the size of my leg. Months later, I dropped all my books down the stairs and my dog runs from the kitchen to me, he is so worried he runs to me to make sure I am okay. But the shock was that he teleports himself to me, I am amused by these new additions my dog has and these powers he is obtaining.
The next months I decide to give my bunny some attention, I feel bad that all these new additions that my dog is gaining will affect my relationship with my bunny. Just as my dog is getting older his hair starts to grow longer, and it starts to get in the way of his daily activities. He grows not only hair but a pair of wings and flies off my mom's high bed. I assume he can fly down the stairs, but he is too scared and even when he tries to fly down his wings give in, and he falls tumbling down the staircase. At this time, he is even bigger than before, he is as tall as me and it starts to get harder and harder by the day to take care of such a big animal with all these new magical powers.
I have some growth potions in my room to control his growth which are next to the shrinking potion and my dog with his super-fast speed bumps into one, which wears off some but not all of the shrinking potion. When I wake up from my slumber, I am confused on what is happening and realize that my dog is helping me with these new powers and that he is not just there to amuse me and ensure I play with him, but he is there to take care of me. Many times, he is there to bring my mood up, help when I am hurt, and just keeps me company. He is growing every day, and it is hard to keep up with him, but he brings a great joy to the family. He grows and brings many exciting things to life, but he grows in our hearts as well with all the memories we have together.
